When the rider pedals, the bike's sensors detect the pedal movement and send a signal to the electric motor to provide power. As you pedal, the electric motor work in combination with your pedaling to give a boost, thus assist you while riding. Also many e-bike have a PAS (Pedal Assistant System) which means that when you are pedaling the bike will automatically turn on the electric motor to assist.
